Mets shut down Jacob deGrom for rest of 2021 season

With the Mets eliminated from playoff contention, right-hander Jacob deGrom will be shut down for the rest of the 2021 season, manager Luis Rojas announced Tuesday:

Rojas said that deGrom is feeling good and “checked all the boxes” during a Monday side session, but with the Mets’ games this week essentially meaningless and deGrom not having a chance to go on a rehab assignment, Rojas said “there’s no point for him to pitch in a game.”

deGrom, 33, missed the entire second half with forearm tightness and a small tear in his right UCL. It was an unfortunate development in what was shaping up to be a historic season for the two-time Cy Young winner.

Over 15 starts this season, deGrom went 7—2 with a 1.08 ERA, a 0.55 WHIP, 146 strikeouts, and 11 walks over 92 innings. His loss played a major role in New York’s second-half collapse — the Mets have gone 27-45 since his last start in the first game of a July 7 doubleheader, while they were 46-37 prior to his injury.

While it won’t be deGrom, the Mets will get a brief glimpse at an All-Star right-hander who missed extended time due to injury, as Noah Syndergaard will start Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Marlins on Tuesday night.
