NL Central Notes: Cubs interested in Alex Avila, Zack Cozart rumors

Here’s the latest from around the National League Central.

The Cubs are among the teams showing interest in Tigers catcher Alex Avila, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi.

Avila, who at 30 can also play first base, is having a breakout offensive campaign. Over 55 games this season, he’s hitting .321/.435/.597 with 11 home runs and 28 RBIs. It’s unlikely the Tigers have a high asking price for Avila, who is signed to just a one-year contract.

The Blue Jays are also interested in Avila, per Morosi.

Here’s the latest from around the National League Central:

  • St. Louis decided to demote Aledmys Diaz, which means Paul DeJong could receive additional playing time.

  • An umpire saved a woman’s life before a Pirates game. Check out the neat story here.

  • Now that the Rays acquired Adeiny Hechavarria, they are probably not in a position to pursue Reds shortstop Zack Cozart.

  • The Brewers placed Chase Anderson on the 10-day disabled list.

  • Derek Norris doesn’t seem to be the solution to Chicago’s need for a veteran catcher.
