MLB trade rumors: Diamondbacks interested in Tigers’ J.D. Martinez

Arizona is seeking offensive help.

Arizona is seeking offensive help and has shown interest in Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.

Morosi adds that talks between the two sides haven’t progressed much and “are not serious yet.”

The Diamondbacks are in need of outfield depth with Yasmany Tomas currently on the disabled list, and even when he is healthy, the addition of Martinez’s bat might prove to be valuable.

Martinez, 29, is having a productive season with Detroit, hitting .298/.379/.602 with 14 home runs and 32 RBIs over 54 games. He has hit .280 in each of the last four seasons.

Because Martinez is only signed through this season, it might not take several prospects to acquire him. He is earning more than $11 million this season, but if a team, such as the Diamondbacks, pay the rest of his remaining salary, the Tigers might be willing to lower their asking price.

Martinez is more of a “rental” player who could help the Diamondbacks, who enter play Saturday trailing the Dodgers by 8.5 games in the National League West.
